Slow Sand Filtration (SSF) has been a cornerstone of clean water production since the 19th century, offering an eco-friendly, low-energy solution to water treatment. Using fine-grain sand and a natural biofilm layer known as the Schmutzdecke, SSF removes particles, reduces turbidity, and eliminates pathogens. Despite its effectiveness and low carbon footprint, SSF systems have seen a decline in favour of more intensive methods due to their space and maintenance requirements. But now, new research is breathing life into this timeless technology, unlocking its potential to tackle modern water challenges. Recent innovations like underwater skimming are revolutionizing SSF maintenance. By cleaning the Schmutzdecke with minimal disruption, this technique preserves the sensitive microbial community, reducing downtime and boosting water quality. Excitingly, researchers have also discovered that microbes in the Schmutzdecke can degrade micropollutants like pesticides and pharmaceuticals, making SSF more effective against emerging contaminants. These advancements blend biology and engineering to create a resilient, sustainable, and cost-effective water treatment system, poised to enhance public health at both small and large scales worldwide. Discover how the Environmental Biotechnology Network's scientists are revolutionising Environmental Biotechnology by harnessing the synergy between microbiology and engineering. This video series explores this relationship in a range of areas from wastewater treatment to advanced biofuels. Our ground-breaking research is paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future. ** For the version of this video with subtitles, see : • Innovation in slow sand filtration: A sust... ** View our complete list of animations here: • Environmental Biotechnology Animations: Mi...
