8 Years with Corticobasal Syndrome

Don Sladek has had symptoms of Corticobasal Syndrome since 2014. This is a neurodegenerative disease with tau pathology. During the first four years, Don progressively declined, In 2019, he participated in the TAUBasket trial with Biogen's medication, Gosuranemab, BIIB092. He immediately started showing signs of benefit and began to actually improve. Unfortunately, on December 13, 2019, the trial with prematurely canceled. Don's strength and coordination rapidly declined during the following 10 months without the medication. The pain became unbearable. In October 2020, Biogen generously allowed him Single Patient Expanded Use. Within 96 hours, his improvement was dramatic! Unfortunately, Biogen is no longer manufacturing the drug. Don has enough medication to get him through June of 2023. Don is a Vietnam-era veteran who was stationed in Southeast Asia. In August 2022, with a large bipartisan majority, Congress passed, and the President signed the PACT Act, a new law that expands VA health care and benefits to veterans exposed to toxic substances. One of the sections of the Act, Title V, provides funding for research. Since Gosuranemab, as an important component of a care plan for Parkinsonism, has demonstrated some success, we are reaching out to Veterans, veteran’s organizations, neurologists and other physicians, organizations that advocate for patients with neurodegenerative diseases, Biogen researchers, and policymakers to help us secure further research with this medication.
