I spent 6 months in Vietnam and 3 months in the Philippines - 9 months total living in Southeast Asia's two most raw, authentic destinations. In this Vietnam vs Philippines comparison, I'm breaking down everything: beaches, cities, food, cost, and which country actually deserves your time in 2025. 🇻🇳 VIETNAM VS PHILIPPINES - THE ULTIMATE RAW SEA BATTLE 🇵🇭 ⏱️ TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 - Vietnam vs Philippines: Ha Giang Overrated? 0:50 - My 9 Months in Both Countries 1:30 - Round 1: Cities & Community (Da Nang vs Cebu) 3:15 - Round 2: Beaches & Nature Showdown 5:00 - Round 3: Food Battle 6:00 - Round 4: Cost & Getting Around 7:00 - Round 5: Things to Do & Activities 8:00 - The Final Verdict 🌴 WHAT I COVER: VIETNAM: 6 months total - 3 months traveling north to south (Hanoi, Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Hoi An, Da Lat, Saigon, Phu Quoc), then 3 months living in Da Nang as my base PHILIPPINES: 3 months island hopping - Siargao, El Nido, Coron, Bohol, Cebu, Moalboal, Palawan, Siquijor, countless boat trips ✅ Best cities: Da Nang vs Cebu comparison ✅ Beaches: Philippines destroys but Vietnam surprises ✅ Food: Vietnamese cuisine edges Filipino food ✅ Cost: Both cheapest in SEA, similar pricing ✅ Infrastructure: Vietnam way easier to navigate ✅ Community feel living in Da Nang vs Philippines island life 🔥 CONTROVERSIAL TAKES: Ha Giang Loop is OVERRATED (Cao Bang is better, less crowded, fewer injuries) Vietnam wins overall but Philippines has best beaches in the world Da Nang is perfect base city (my 3rd favorite city in world after Tokyo) Both are raw and authentic - what Thailand/Bali used to be Philippines beaches Vietnam beaches by a mile Vietnamese food Filipino food (unless you eat seafood) Bohol nearly stole my heart like Da Nang did 💰 COST COMPARISON: VIETNAM: Cheapest I've found in SEA. Street food at 2-3AM, affordable accommodation, good value everywhere. Some places don't list prices (have to ask), but overall straightforward. Da Nang living costs incredibly low for quality of life. PHILIPPINES: Same price range as Vietnam day-to-day BUT constant "Feelopines" fees (environmental fees, boat fees, every activity). Transportation between islands expensive. Day-to-day cheaper, but fees add up fast. WINNER: Vietnam for straightforward pricing and ease. Philippines for raw adventure. 🏙️ CITIES COMPARISON: DA NANG (Vietnam): Beach city, mountains, perfect community feel, affordable, modern infrastructure, peaceful. My base for 3 months - didn't want to leave. Top 3 city in world. CEBU (Philippines): Great city, incredible malls, clean, modern. Different vibe - more of a hub than a home. HANOI vs MANILA: Hanoi chaotic but safe and full of character. Manila unsafe (local warned us not to leave accommodation at night). 🏖️ BEACHES & NATURE: PHILIPPINES WINS BEACHES: El Nido, Coron, Siargao, Moalboal = most beautiful beaches in world. Limestone cliffs, hidden lagoons, white sand, crystal water. Nothing compares. VIETNAM NATURE VARIETY: Ha Giang (overrated but beautiful), Cao Bang (better alternative), Halong Bay, Phu Quoc empty beaches, Da Lat mountains, incredible waterfalls. Philippines = jaw-dropping beach moments constantly Vietnam = peaceful, empty beaches + mountain/city variety 🍜 FOOD: VIETNAM WINS: Pho, banh mi, bun cha, fresh spring rolls. Street food at 2AM-3AM everywhere. I love Vietnamese food - could eat pho every day. PHILIPPINES: Good but seafood-heavy. If you don't eat seafood (like me), options more limited. Hearty, comforting, but not as varied. 🚌 GETTING AROUND: VIETNAM EASIER: Cheap internal flights, sleeper buses work well (if you can sleep), straightforward routes. Infrastructure solid even in rural areas. PHILIPPINES HARDER: Ferries unreliable, flights between islands expensive, transportation unpredictable. Doable but frustrating. 🏆 THE VERDICT: VIETNAM WINS (barely) - Better cities, easier travel, better food, better infrastructure, incredible community feel in Da Nang. Perfect for long-term base. PHILIPPINES = Best beaches in world, better for pure adventure and natural beauty. Higher highs but more frustration. If you want to LIVE somewhere: Vietnam (specifically Da Nang) If you want to EXPLORE beaches: Philippines Both are raw, authentic, and what Thailand/Bali used to be before mass tourism. 📊 MY BACKGROUND: 5+ years long-term travel. 5th extended trip (12+ months). 9 months between these two countries = real lived experience. 💬 Been to both?
