In April and July of 2002, I asked my friend Vinnie if he would be interested in reliving the great bonding experience we had while recording my last CD, TRACKING. He jumped at the chance, and we decided to do three dates: one in Chicago, one in Whitewater, Wisconsin, and one in Malibu, California. This CD reflects some of the great moments from the Malibu and Chicago shows. The concert in Whitewater was also recorded; however, the recording came directly from the house mix, so those tracks are not included here. Every morning I run about three miles, and while running, I listen to music. I was listening to Vinnie's CD on one of those runs, and as I listened to it for the fourth or fifth time, I heard new things that I had not heard previously and decided for only the second time in my life as a composer, that I wanted to arrange and record another composer's music. The only other composer that I have felt I could artistically add my interpretation to their art is Jimi Hendrix. I asked Vinnie which one of his works he would most like to experience from my perspective, and he suggested JOHN'S BLUES. I listened to the CD once again and began to really understand the complexity of Vinnie's writing. I realized how truly gifted he is as a composer. As I considered my orchestral plan, I was amazed at the flexibility his writing allows for not only melodic and harmonic interpretations but also textures and colors. One of my favorite classical composers is Modest Mussorgsky, and as most orchestrators know, Mussorgsky's 'Pictures At An Exhibition' is a composition that is so well crafted that orchestrators throughout history have used it to create their art. I see Vinnie's work, JOHN'S BLUES, in that category.
