Well, if you get technical, it's any jacket with some kind of cinch at the hem. It's ideally also short and blousey, with the cinch enhancing the blousiness, thus giving the blouson its name. When I talk about a cinch, I am speaking broadly. An elastic hem, buttons, buckles, a drawstring, or just a waistband that's much narrower than the body. But this definition is a little bit tricky. It sucks in every bomber jacket (historically a close relative of the blouson and the Eisenhower jacket, but in modern views quite different), coach's jacket, Harrington jacket (which I'm going to define narrowly below), many barn jackets, and even a lot of trucker jackets and double riders. If the term "blouson" refers to all of those, then it doesn't mean anything. Years ago, I was shamed by an annoyed redditor into getting pedantic about "Harrington" jackets. Many of these blousons will be referred to as Harringtons by people or brands, but if you want to define Harrington narrowly, it must have a specific style of two button collar, and buttoned flaps on the pockets. These details give it a certain charm. It feels like the kind of thing my grandpa would have worn in his coolest era, especially in Khaki, although I'd personally prefer one in olive. Personally, my idea of a blouson also includes welt pockets at the sides and a spread collar. It's a simple jacket style, and that's its charm. No frills, just a cool jacket. So many of the jacket styles that technically count as a blouson just feel different, and I've excluded them. Some of my recommendations don't even have a cinched waist, but they still scratch the itch I want scratched. Some are longer or slimmer or otherwise different from the platonic ideal, but still make my list. So my definition is not only broad but a little bit arbitrary.
