This film is one of the most complex and most visually stunning films I know. It has several alternating time levels and plays with the concept of a film within a film. In this case it's Alfred Hitchock's "I Confess" from 1952, which is one of the major time levels the story revolves around. In its core, "Le Confessional" is about memory, what we choose to remember and what we choose to forget. More precisely, it is a film about our upbringing, our childhood, and the influence religion has on a society and more to the point: the nuclear family. In this case it's all about Catholicism - it being the dominant religion in Quebec - and the confession Hitchcock's film alludes to becomes an idea for a film in real life. A film like that would be more of a Greek Tragedy. And that's just what "Le Confessional" is. As that, it is no less than a masterpiece. What's more, the fabulous Kristin Scott Thomas can be seen in a supporting role playing Hitchcock's assistant. Her role is the only one in the whole, otherwise sombre, movie providing comic relief. By doing that Lepage followed a tradition by Hitchcock, who often put character actresses in - rather camp - supporting roles that were intended to counterbalance the nail-biting suspense of his films. Just think of Jessie Royce Landis' role in "North by Northwest" or Patricia Hitchcock's part in "Psycho".
