More than 100 tons of coal ash are produced every year in power plants that burn coal to generate electricity. When coal ash spilled into the Dan River in North Carolina from a holding pond at a Duke Energy power plant, the nation was awakened to the growing problem of how to safely store and possibly use coal ash. While coal ash (which is filled with toxic metals) is already approved by the EPA for use in cement, two engineers at North Carolina A &T University have created a building material out of coal ash that is fireproof, waterproof, super strong and ultra light.
