https://www.afibsurgeons.org - Watch Dr. Armin Kiankhooy as he presents from a surgical procedure perspective, what defines a “Cox Maze IV” procedure. Further, Dr. Kiankhooy discusses why that distinction is important to make. Dr. Kiankhooy reflects on the outcomes of Dr. Gillinov's paper in the New England Journal. The paper looks at whether concomitant atrial fibrillation treatment during a mitral valve procedure leads to an increased freedom from atrial fibrillation. Then the other analysis is if you look at the surgical ablation group, and you're comparing bi-atrial Maze procedure to a standard pulmonary vein isolation, is there a difference? One of the take-home points from this paper is that 63% of patients had restoration to normal sinus at one year post operation. These patients underwent a surgical ablation concomitantly with their mitral valve surgery.
