Will Canada’s firearms ban expansion reduce gun violence and crime?

The Canadian government expanded its ban on firearms on Thursday, adding 324 makes and models of guns to the prohibited weapons list. This comes four years after the ban of another prohibition of 1,500 other makes and models firearms. Though the feds say they are working with provinces, territories and police on a planned buyback of banned weapons from individual owners, the recent expansion has received some mixed reviews, with many debating the effectiveness of the restrictions. In an interview with crime commentator Hank Idsinga, Global’s Miranda Anthistle learns – from a law enforcement perspective – how much of an impact the program could actually have on national gun violence and crime.
