Manufacturing moved overseas. Synthetic materials replaced leather. Sneakers replaced dress shoes. When a new pair costs less than a resole, repair stops making sense. Americans now discard over 300 million pairs of shoes every year. Ninety-five percent end up in landfills where synthetic materials take decades or even centuries to decompose.
