The phrase “Houston Strong” illustrates the unwavering spirt of the people of Texas after Hurricane Harvey. For Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists, Harvey took more than the homes of its employees. It decimated their hospital - an iconic Houston landmark for over 20 years, home to more than 250 full-time employees, and location of the popular veterinary hospital featured on Nat Geo WILD’s Animal ER - and left animals across the city in desperate need of care. The true spirit and call-to-serve nature of the GCVS staff did not flinch as they put their own losses aside and rallied to ensure thousands of Houston-area animals received desperately needed healthcare. GCVS president Ryan Buck emerged from the devastation of the 54,000-square-foot facility having learned a life lesson that he would like to share. The lesson didn’t center on how to prepare for the Hurricane or how to rebuild. It centered on the true heartbeat of the hospital – the people who kept animals, and hope, alive while surrounded by unimaginable loss.
