Tomato Seed Saving (Ultra Fast/No Fermenting!)

After losing a couple batches of processed seed to fermenting seed (only 3 days), I was devastated because the seed was precious to my next generation of seedless tomatoes. Why? Because my seedless tomatoes are an agricultural breakthrough and the failure nearly ended my mutant that carried the wonderful gene. The problem with fermenting seed is that there's a window of effectiveness. Either it can be pulled too soon where gel is still on the coating or it can be too late where the fermenting kills the seed. You'd think that the number of days, 3 for example, would be consistently ok, but it's not. It depends on the environment you're fermenting whether warmer or colder temps and the amount of sugars/solids you're fermenting. Long story to say, I accidentally killed off my precious seed. I developed this method after working with microgreens. Some seed have a coating. I also learned the hard way that saving seed without treating seed can lead to a very bad next year. I researched and found hot water treatment of seed as well as this one--bleach treatment. They are both called priming methods. Give it a go. You'll be ok! Here's the process: 1. Remove seed into fine strainer. 2. Blow gel off seed with "full" setting. 3. Thump seed into a pre-mixed blend of 1 part bleach and 5 parts water. 4. Shake vigorously for 2 minutes. No more, no less. Well give or take 10 seconds I'd say. 5. Pour seed back into strainer and use "full" setting again to wash off bleach. 6. Thump seed onto paper plate to dry and store.
