In this episode, Peter and Werner begin the exciting journey of building a traditional earthen oven, starting with the stone base and the basket frame. Watch as they carefully level the stones and create a sturdy foundation that will one day support a fully functional 1700’s-style outdoor oven. Using techniques from birch bark canoe making, Peter crafts cedar sheathing to form the basket frame. Peter then demonstrates each step—from splitting cedar with wedges, froe, and knife to boiling and bending the strips. Once complete, the cedar basket will serve as the mold for the oven’s clay exterior, which will be shaped and cured in a future episode. The frame will eventually be burned away, leaving behind a functional earthen oven.
