The role of gender in migration process

Migration trends over the last years suggest an increase in female migration as women and girls become among the main contributing group to migration flows. Women no longer migrate solely for family mobility of family unification. Independent movement of women and girls affects their empowerment as access to more income-generating opportunities enables them to gain independence and autonomy. GIZ is committed to considering the gender-specific potential of migration and pursuing gender equality. To this end, gender is anchored as a cross-cutting theme in all fields of action and efforts are made to sensitise partner institutions on the gender aspects of migration and to advise them on a gender-conscious implementation of the GCM. See a few experiences of Kosovan women migrants that highlight the need for policy changes, in addition to the views from partners that highlight the impact that GIZ contribution has had in developing a gender lens in their day-to-day work.
