Super Micro Computer (SMCI) was founded more than 30 years ago and is one of the only pure-play investments into the next wave of AI spending. The company makes the servers and data center solutions that will hold Nvidia chips. Revenue is expected to have doubled this year and to keep that pace of growth as the data center buildout grows into the end of the decade. Hyperscaler companies like Alphabet and Amazon are spending hundreds of billions on data centers, and SMCI makes all the hardware that goes inside. But that's when the problems started. Hindenburg Research accused the company of a list of allegations from accounting manipulations to related party transactions and sanctions violations. SMCI stock plunged and then fell further when it missed filing its 10K report and further still when its auditor resigned last week.
