In a future where psychological studies have proven that women can cope with the equal pressures of spacecraft responsibilities and simply being in space for long stretches of time, Captain Miller (also a psychologist) finds herself facing the problem of whether or not to "turn off" her crew mates' conditioning, which has them believing they're in a mere test run for a trip to Mars and back. Originally published in the February 1957 issue of New Worlds magazine. Re-published in the July 1966 issue of an Italian magazine called Urania, and two anthologies: Terra Science Fiction in 1982, and a German one the following year. It also appeared in two collections of the author's stories: Deadly Litter in 1964, and a German-language one featuring our current story as its title in 1965. Read by Darrell T.
