How to Get More Severance - An Employment Lawyer Explains

Been laid off and wondering how to increase your severance package? I'm Robert Ottinger, an employment lawyer with over 25 years of experience helping employees negotiate better deals. In this video, I share my #1 tip for requesting more severance after being legally terminated. This advice is simple, polite, and proven to be effective. ⚠️ Note: If you've been wrongfully terminated due to discrimination, whistleblowing, or retaliation, it's best to speak directly with an employment lawyer. But for everyone else, this strategy might help you secure a modest increase without complicating things. 🔑 Key Takeaways: Keep it short and polite. Avoid mentioning grievances or past work accomplishments. Focus on the request to ease your transition period. If you’ve been through this process or found this advice useful, drop a comment below and share your experience. Call Now: 866-680-2081 Hi, I'm employment lawyer Robert Ottinger, and I've been helping people negotiate severance packages for over 25 years. And I've learned through this experience the best way to request more severance for most people. Now this advice doesn't apply to someone who's been fired for a wrong, for an illegal reason. If you think you've been wrongfully terminated for discrimination or whistleblowing or retaliation or something like that, this isn't for you. You need to talk to an employment lawyer. But for everyone else who's been let go for a legal reason, and that's most people, I have found that the people who go back to their companies and make a short, polite request for more get the best results. Something like this. Thank you for the severance that you provided. However, I was wondering if the company is open to considering a modest increase to help me through this difficult transition period. Something like that, I've seen get the best results. A lot of people that when they're in that situation, they want to go tell the company about all kinds of things like what a great worker they were or about some kind of grievance they might've had or some... perceived slight. Don't mention that stuff. Don't tell them about all the work you did because they already paid you for it. A severance is different. A severance is designed, it's just money to help you through that transition period. And the job you have now and the one you hopefully get soon, that's it. So just make a simple, polite request. Don't go into anything else because people are busy. They don't want to hear your long stories. They really don't. Be considerate of their time and make a polite request. And in my experience, the people who do that get the best results. Anyway, I hope that makes sense. I'm Robert.
