This is the continuation of our series on Breaking the Silence on Maternal Mental Health, created by Make Mothers Matter. In Series 4, MMM engages in a heartwarming yet informative conversation with Ana Barišić, a children’s rights advocate. Having experienced family separation at a young age, she received the support of SOS Children’s village in Croatia. Here she speaks on her testimony of her time under the care of a loving host mother, who instilled values of resilience and compassion into her. We also delve into the support children and mothers need in order to thrive communally and prevent familial separation. Episode 1: Barriers to accessing mental health support: accessibility, affordability, stigma In this episode, Ana explores the challenges mothers face when dealing with mental health issues. These barriers include a lack of resources, societal stigma, limited awareness, struggles with self-acceptance, and at times, even a reluctance to seek help. Episode 2: The importance of early intervention and support for new mothers In this segment, we explore the critical role early intervention plays in supporting mothers facing mental health challenges. Ana highlights the importance of raising public awareness—particularly among medical professionals—and encourages proactive efforts to provide timely intervention and support. Episode 3: Mental health is just as important—if not more so—than physical health. In this episode, Ana discusses what motivates people to invest in their mental well-being. She emphasizes that increasing awareness is key to helping individuals view mental health care as a vital form of self-investment. Episode 4: “I learned what love means, and what a family structure is… sometimes, a mother doesn’t know what to do—she just does her best.” In this episode, Ana reflects on how her life was transformed by the love and care she received from her host mom at the SOS Children’s Village. This woman, who embodied love and selflessness, became a guiding force—teaching Ana not only how to care for herself, but also how to face life with courage and extend that care to those around her. Episode 5: A genuine connection in the early years is what makes a real difference. In this segment, Ana speaks candidly about the mental health impacts on children who grow up without proper emotional support. Drawing from her own experience, she highlights a range of signs— from hyper-independence and difficulty forming authentic relationships to a lack of self-awareness and confidence. Episode 6: How to prevent child separation In the final episode, Ana explores the different layers of support that families need to stay together. She emphasizes that separation should always be a last resort, and highlights the importance of providing comprehensive support at every level to ensure the well-being of both children and their families. 🎞️We hope you share these #maternalmentalhealth stories widely ✅For more #MENTALHEALTH films, subscribe to our channel: / @makemothersmatter9064
