In this video I cover the basics of why we use bonsai soil verses conventional compost. I also show the mixes I use, which have proven themselves to work well over a number of years. In general, the perfect mix for your location, will allow the soil within the pot to become dry enough to be ready for watering the following day. It is essential that the soil undergoes a drying cycle to prevent the roots from becoming permanently wet, which can lead to root rot. As mentioned in the video, there are many different ways to make bonsai soil. The mixes in the video work well for me in my part of the UK (South East) but you may need to adapt each mix to suit your growing needs / climate. There are also instances where different trees benefit from a slightly adjusted mix. Additionally, I discuss the use of cat litter as a bonsai soil amendment, specifically molar clay or diatomaceous soil.
