💰 Mayor Zohran Mamdani got real with New Yorkers on Wednesday about the fiscal challenges facing the city, with a budget deficit to the tune of $12 billion, which he blamed on "mismanagement" by former Mayor Eric Adams. "We did not arrive at this place by accident," Mamdani said. "This crisis has a name, and a chief architect. In the words of the Jackson 5, 'It's as easy as ABC.' This is the Adams budget crisis." The budget gaps facing the city today are greater than those during the Great Recession, the mayor said. He called Adams' self-proclaimed FY26 "best budget ever" a "poisoned chalice" that was handed to his administration, while noting that the former mayor still did not properly fund essential city services. "He budgeted paltry fractions of what was actually required, undermining the city's ability to fulfill its promises," Mamdani said. Among his suggestions to get the city back on proper financial footing is one of his campaign promises: increasing income tax on the top 1% of New Yorkers, and increasing corporate taxes to match those of New Jersey. The mayor also said he wanted to mend the city's fiscal relationship with the state, saying that "no part of this state gives more and gets less in return than New York City." 🎤 Mack Rosenberg reports 📹 Mack Rosenberg 📸 Ed Reed/Mayoral Photography Office 🔊 Tune into 1010 WINS at 92.3 FM for more weather updates
