And those Captain Comeback, Jim Harbaugh led Colts were undoubtedly a great story at the time. On a personal level, they are one of the reasons I got into the NFL as an 11-year-old. When you go back and watch the game in modern times while placing context around, well, the upset is far less impressive. If we are being honest, calling it an upset doesn’t even feel right. How did we get to this divisional round clash? Let’s start with Indianapolis. In 1994, they finished 8-8 with Jim Harbaugh as the starter for most of the year. Wanting to take a step forward in 1995, they shipped their 1996 first round pick to Tampa Bay for Craig Erickson. Why the Colts thought this was a good idea will forever be a mystery. Erickson had an 11-18 record as a starting QB with Tampa boasting an ugly 34-31 touchdown to interception ratio. Things went as you would expect things to go with Craig Erickson as your starting QB. He was benched in the team’s first two games, with Harbaugh coming in and doing his whole Captain Comeback schtick each time. Eventually, the future Michigan coach was named starter in week three. While Kansas City entered the playoffs with football’s best records and a league-leading defense, this was a team that had some serious question marks. And we also need to mention that Chiefs head coach Marty Schottenheimer was notorious for choking in the playoffs, even in 1995. In fact, this is something that gets brought up by commentators on several occasions. Despite this, the Chiefs are favored by eight points.
