Ans: The atomic size of fluorine (F = 72 pm) is less than chlorine (CI = 99 pm). Due to the small size, there is significant electron-electron repulsion between the lone pairs on the fluorine atoms, which weakens the bond despite the high electronegativity of fluorine. b) Is the reaction between NaCl(aq) and F₂ gas possible? i) Give reason whether yes or no. ii) If yes, write the equation for this reaction. Ans: i) Fluorine (F2) is a stronger oxidizing agent than chlorine (Cl₂) because it has a higher standard electrode potential. This means fluorine can displace chlorine from its compounds.
