Maxwell’s Silver Hammer was possibly written in Spring of 1968 during the Beatles trip to India by Paul McCartney. It’s origins dated all the way back to January 1966 though as Paul heard a version of playwright Alfred Jarry’s Ubu Cocu (Ubu Cuckolded) on BBC radio. It was described as a “pataphysical extravaganza”. This expression left a fond impression on Paul. Paul first brought the song to the rest of the band during the Let it Be/Get Back sessions on January 3, 1969. The band was already less than enthusiastic to record the song. Rehearsals took place on January 7, 8, and 10. George Harrison had quit the band on the 10th as Ringo had did during the White Album sessions a couple of months prior. George was later convinced to come back and they went on to thousands of more rehearsals. John Lennon, Ringo Starr, and George all famously hated the song and the recording of it as it went on for weeks and was the biggest example of Paul’s perfectionism. On the actual song, John refused to play on it. The actual recording of the song took place a couple months later during the Abbey Road sessions. John, who refused to play on the song anyway, was recovering from a car crash he had recently had at the time. What was funny about the whole situation is Paul’s response to the other Beatles’ criticisms: “They got annoyed because ‘Maxwell’s Silver Hammer’ took three days to record. Big deal.” Recording for the song began on July 9, 1969 the band recorded 12 takes with George on six string bass guitar, Ringo on drums, and Paul on piano and vocals. The did even more takes and chose take 21 as the best. They spent over 2 hours overdubbing guitars. The next day, July 10, Paul added more piano, produce George Martin added Hammond organ, George recorded an additional guitar part fed through a Leslie speaker and Ringo banged on an anvil. Paul recorded more lead vocals with George and Ringo helping with backing vocals. More guitar and vocals were added on July 11. Paul, George, and Ringo recorded the final “Silver hammer man” in two different octaves and combined both recordings. The song was finished on August 6 when Paul added Moog synthesizers. George had recently brought in the synthesizer which he had bought recently specifically with the intent to use it on the album. To replicate the piano sound, I used the Module app with the treble lowered all the way mixed with the Pianoteq app with the treble set slightly down. A compressor is on both apps. For the Hammond, I used the built in Hammond organ on Logic Pro with the Spin app added on top, which is a Leslie Cabinet simulator. The speed is set to slow. I used the Syntronik app for the Moog synthesizer parts. This is all on IOS. Maxwell’s Silver Hammer was released on September 26, 1969 on Abbey Road.
