In 331 BC, Alexander the Great faced the ultimate test. King Darius III assembled the largest army in history on the plains of Gaugamela—estimated by ancient sources at one million men, supported by 15 elephants and 200 scythed chariots designed to mince the Macedonian phalanx. Darius had even leveled the terrain to turn the battlefield into a giant "guillotine" for Alexander's forces. Refusing to attack at night, Alexander deployed a brilliant counter-tactic. When the deadly chariots charged, his phalanx opened lanes, allowing them to pass through harmlessly before destroying them. Then, Alexander used a diagonal maneuver to stretch the Persian line, creating a tiny gap between the cavalry and the Immortals. Leading his elite Companion cavalry in a wedge formation, he charged directly at Darius, forcing the King of Kings to flee and shattering the Persian Empire forever.
