Here is our Cansanity garden tour for August 2022 highlighting some of our favourite organically grown vegetables. In the summer of 2021, we moved to a 2.5 acre country property surrounded by glorious Ontario farmland. The first order of business was to break ground and build a vegetable garden. So over the course of last year, we designed a large but basic garden with wide paths and plenty of room to grow all the vegetables we will use in a year. The most important thing we wanted to accomplish in the first year was to set the foundation of the garden and to start growing. Over the rest of our lifetime here, we will add elements to this garden that will give it more structure and many points of interest. We hope that you will follow along on our journey here at Cansanity as we continue to share our gardening, cooking, baking and canning videos. The growing rows in this garden were all built the same with a mix of soil, well aged cow manure (at least 3 years) and rock dust (also called chipper dust). The paths were dug and then straw was laid down to prevent weeds from getting established. But before we did this, we had to have the lawn tilled because it had alfalfa growing in this plot the year prior. Special thanks go out to our good friends Wayne, Ryan and Harrison for using their farm equipment to turn over the soil and for supplying us with soil, manure, rock dust and straw. In this video we showcase our favourite kale, beets, leeks, celery, Swiss chard, lettuce, tomatoes, parsley, basil, pumpkin, acorn squash, spaghetti squash, butternut squash, bush beans, pole beans, serranoes, bell peppers. In November, we will be breaking ground again and building another vegetable garden. We will video the entire process and share it when that garden is built and ready for planting.
