Presentation from the ALT-ELESIG Scotland meeting on the 29th May 2024. Full Title: Harnessing AI for Anatomy Assessment: A Practical Application from SAQs to Bespoke MCQs for Student Success Presenters: Dr Ourania Varsou, Dr Caroline Allen, Dr Michelle Welsh (University of Glasgow) In this presentation, we will discuss how we used generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) to adapt our existing exam bank of Short Answer Questions (SAQs), from our Year 3 BSc in Anatomy at the University of Glasgow, to inform the development of Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs). We chose to transition from SAQs to MCQs, for the compulsory section of our end of year exams, as the latter assess information breadth, mirror real-world decision-making thought processes and provide a breakdown of performance, leading to better student outcomes. When it comes to marking, MCQs are also time efficient. This process involved four stages: Stage 1 - development of a secure and bespoke ChatGPT bot trained on our SAQ bank and lab manuals; Stage 2 - AI-assisted MCQ development; Stage 3 - human expert verifying all work for accuracy; and Stage 4 - all content undergoing rigorous internal and external scrutiny as part of our existing assessment quality assurance processes. This combination of AI with human oversight demonstrates a practical example of how we can responsibly use this technology to enhance assessment processes.
