In northwestern Colorado, is an area called Sand Wash Basin, made up of sandy ridges, swales, and buttes. A huge swath of open land, that was once the bottom of a long gone ocean. In this formittable landscape, in the high desert, live a famed herd of wild horses. These mustangs are managed by the United States Bureau of Land Management, with oversight by concerned local citizens on their welfare. There is quite a large group of livestock found here, owned by different ranchers who hold grazing permits on this public land, for certain times of the year. Mostly, sheep grazing is found within this HMA. All together, the current AML is 163-362. The horses within the HMA exhibit many different colors, although the most common are gray and sorrel. Based on genetic analysis, the herd's highest similarity is to Iberian Spanish breeds, followed by gaited breeds, North American breeds, and Arabian breeds. Some of them, just seen in this video, are very stout, thick muscled and have good conformation overall.
