We Don’t Have X Ray Vision: Optimizing Dysphagia Assessment with Instrumental Exams

This webinar will share preferred practices for selecting, conducting, interpreting, and utilizing instrumental exams to assess swallowing disorders. Strengths and limitations of different instrumental exams like MBSS and FEES will be discussed, along with clinical applications to promote more accurate dysphagia diagnosis, targeted treatment planning, and positive patient outcomes. The session will also include tips for integrating critical thinking and current evidence supporting the use of instrumental exams, to optimize the safety and quality of life of those living with swallowing disorders. Meet the Presenter: Rinki Varindani Desai, MS.,CCC-SLP, CBIS, CDP Rinki Varindani Desai is a medical speech-language pathologist (SLP), certified brain injury specialist and certified dementia practitioner, specializing in the assessment and treatment of swallowing disorders in adults. She is the founder of the Medical SLP Forum, co-creator of the Dysphagia Therapy mobile app, and co-founder and COO of the Swallowing Training and Education Portal learning platform. Rinki currently serves as a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA) Scientific and Professional Education Board, as President-Elect of the Mississippi Speech and Hearing Association and is on the Board of Burgundy and White, a nonprofit organization for head and neck cancer survivors. She was awarded ASHA’s 2022 Media Outreach Champion award for advocating for patients living with swallowing disorders and has earned several awards for continuing education, leadership, and clinical service over the years. In addition to teaching and mentoring graduate students, she has presented nationally and internationally, and published articles on topics related to adult dysphagia. Rinki practices as the adult outpatient lead SLP in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and neck Surgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. In her down time, she enjoys reading, writing, cooking, traveling, and doing what she can to help advance the profession by paying it forward.
