Ouverture in D major, G.F. Handel Clarinet 1 - Anna Harris Clarinet 2 - Charlie Kay French Horn - Caleb Kernaghan G. F. Handel was born in 1685 in Germany but spent most of his life in England. He is well known for his larger works such as Messiah but also wrote chamber works such as this. Handel composed Overture in D major in 1741 and it’s one of the first chamber works written for the newly invented clarinet. The opening moderato movement begins with a dotted rhythm in the clarinets echoed in the horn. The second Allegro movement begins canonically. A fanfare-like theme is passed between the instruments and the movement has elements of a Fugue. Larghetto is a slow and lyrical movement where the clarinets play a gentle, floaty melody. The next movement begins with a playful melody in the clarinets which is imitated by the horn. Handel then brings in a gentle, descending triplet figure which contrasts with the initial theme of crotchets and quavers. The suite ends with an exciting Allegro movement. An upbeat melody is passed between the clarinets while the horn harmonises it. There is a quieter middle section before the main theme returns to end the piece. Performed in St Paul's church on 14th February 2024
