Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) Solar Sail students are working together to design, build, and test a context camera to be used on NASA’s Solar Cruiser Mission. The team is also developing an image processing system that will model the relationship of the sail's shape and the optical pressure to assess performance. The project will process the images and determine the optical force pushing the sail. The VIP program provides an opportunity for undergraduate students to earn academic credit while engaging in research and design projects related to active research areas of Purdue faculty members and national, international, and industry-sponsored design challenges. First-year through senior students can participate on interdisciplinary and vertically-integrated teams with faculty and graduate student mentors for multiple semesters to address these real-world research and design challenges.
