Part 1/9. In this part the historical context is being presented. Interviews with those who were still a child when they left with their parents to Surinam. The documentary Jaji was made to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Javanese people migration to Suriname, during the Dutch colonial era. Jaji, literally meaning ‘companions/shipmates’, seeks to find out what remained of the strong sense of solidarity which was typical among the Javanese who traveled in the same boat from Dutch Indies to Suriname. The so-called Jaji feeling was reflected in many aspects of everyday life. Does the feeling still exist in Suriname and the Netherlands, and if so, how do we notice this? And did other forms of solidarity similar to Jaji, arise? What has happened with the descendants of the Javanese indentured labourers? Which cultural expressions and legacies are left and what positions have Javanese taken in society, are questions addressed in the film.
