An emerging technology combining a drone with a highly sensitive gamma-ray detector is being deployed to monitor radiation at contaminated uranium legacy sites in Central Asia. Project summary: A joint project between the IAEA and a research consortium from Germany under the umbrella of the IAEA PUI-CGULS (NS). The project aims to develop a new technology for airborne mapping of radioactive contamination at former uranium mining and processing sites in Central Asia using a drone and to provide experts from this region with practical know-how on this technology and to guide them data interpretation. Partner countries are the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Republic of Tajikistan.
