Born in 1965, in India to middle-class parents who both worked in the nation’s sprawling railway network, Rajiv moved frequently during his childhood. Always deep rooted in the culture and strong family ties, his journey represents the Indian Dream! From almost joining the merchant navy to securing a much deserving seat in the premium Engineering Institute of IIT Madras, he successfully proved his mettle at every stage. From the city of Chennai to marking his place in Silicon Valley, he never shied away from approaching worthy opportunities and met commendable colleagues. While pursuing his master’s degree in electrical engineering and computer science at UC Berkeley, Ramaswami landed a job with IBM Research Labs. His mentor was Paul E. Green Jr., one of the pioneering American engineers of the 20th century. He completed his Master's Degree and PhD at University of California, Berkeley and went on to do research work at IBM‘s Research Labs. Building teams, finding stability, growth and passing cultural values onto his kids, he is the definition of a global Indian, whose heart still beats for his homeland. On December 9, 2020, he became President and CEO of Nutanix, a trailblazing Silicon Valley startup turned into a global public company with key components of R&D in India. Nutanix’s vision is to make hybrid multi-cloud simple and free customers to achieve their business outcomes. This focus on simplifying IT fit in perfectly with Rajiv’s more than 35 years as a technologist focused on developing technology for the greater good. With his involvement in the educational charity OSAAT : One School At A Time, he aims to uplift the infrastructure of rural, underprivileged schools and create scalable, sustainable solutions for digital learning in India. This way he feels he is giving back to the community and his nation, which has given him all. Let’s know the journey of this simple yet revolutionary mind, who loves a plain Dosa but is a pioneer in optical networking, making vision into reality in this complex wide world of web! #nutanix #siliconvalley #humansofbombay Timestamps: 00:00 - Introduction 00:28 - Meet our President & CEO 00:54 - Rajiv’s Childhood 2:40 - I was the topper of my class 3:15 - Rajiv’s family tree 4:00 - My 97 year old Grandmother 4:21 - My Mom and Dad both had equal careers 6:28 - IIT MADRAS 7:15 - Almost Merchant Navy 8:03 - Life as an IITian 8:57 - Old Friends 9:31 - 3 Idiots 10:41 - First job at ITI 11:35 - My fascination with data & communications 12:01 - University of California, Berkeley 12:55 - My first plane journey 13:39 - Life in USA 15:11 - IBM Research Lab, Zurich 17:21 - My Mentor Paul Green 18:28 - Quality of a good leader 19:15 - Take the risk! 19:56 - Building first product 21:01 - Silicon Valley calls Rajiv 22:51 - Coming back to India? 25:00 - How to grow in the corporate world? 27:00 - What really matters? 27:32 - CEO NUTANIX 29:01 - Joining during Covid 30:45 -Work-Life Integration 32:21 - Team Building is necessary 33:53 - What drives MR.
