(8 Aug 1998) English/Nat Scores of Burmese protestors are staging a demonstration in front of the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok. The exiles are marking the 10th anniversary of the student uprising in Yangon that ended in the massacre of hundreds. They say they will stand vigil until August 21st, the deadline opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has given for handing over power to a parliament elected in 1990. Even Bangkok's gruelling traffic could not slow down protestors descending on Myanmar's embassy. Pro-democracy groups hold demonstrations here on a regular basis. But the 8th of August has a special appeal and has brought many groups together in numbers rarely seen at this site. Ten years ago students angry and dissatisfied with the military dictatorship took to the streets of Yangon - then Rangoon - for six days. The armed forces put down the uprising with brutal force, with hundreds and perhaps thousands losing their lives. In the decade since, the country has lived under tight control from the military, which ignored 1990s election results. The winners in those polls were the National League for Democracy, led by Aung San Suu Kyi. The N-L-D has demanded that the National Assembly be allowed to meet by August 21st this year. Protestors in Bangkok are appealing to the rank and file in the military to respect the people's wishes. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We know that these soldiers left the people, left for their nations, so we would like to advise to the family soldiers, please don't bring death to the people, please don't death to their own people's leader, and then please follow to the wish of their people, and then don't follow to the order of the brutal orders from their officer, I mean their army officers." SUPER CAPTION: Zaw Win, All-Burmese Students Democratic Front The assembled groups here have a series of aims. Some are supporting ethnic insurgencies, while others are taking up the cause of the N-L-D. Many have pledged keep vigil outside the embassy until the National Assembly is convened. But they could have a long wait - the Myanmar government has shown no sign of caving in to domestic and international pressure.
