Protesters shouted "Russia Without Putin" and "No More Terror", and burned flares as they marched along the city's Tverskaya street. One policeman was hurt when a protester held a lit flare close to his face, according to Russian news agency Itar-Tass. The policeman has been taken to hospital and a suspect has been arrested, the news agency reported. Attending the rally were members of liberal, radical nationalist and communist groups. Riot police were stationed along the streets, and several of the protesters were seen being escorted by police into police vehicles. Some of protesters told AP Television that a number of demonstrators had already been detained by police on their way to the rally. Demonstrations against the suppression of the media have increased in Russia after an attack on a journalist last week. On Saturday a Russian reporter was attacked near his Moscow home by two men, sparking renewed concerns about media freedom in Russia . Kommersant reporter Oleg Kashin was admitted to a hospital after the savage attack which left a leg and several fingers broken. His wife said on Friday that he has now emerged from a drug-induced coma but remains attached to a medical ventilator. President Dmitry Medvedev has ordered that Kashin's attackers be found and punished, but protesters on Wednesday heavily criticised the government for having created an atmosphere in which attacks such as these could take place. Kashin was the latest in a line of journalists and activists to be assaulted in Russia, which international media watchdogs rank among the world's most dangerous for reporters. Other journalists and activists who have also campaigned on the issue have been attacked in the past. One of the most serious cases was Mikhail Beketov, a muckraking Russian reporter left handicapped by a 2008 beating. Beketov, a reporter for the Khimkinskaya Pravda newspaper, irked authorities with his articles about corruption involving the Khimki forest, part of which officials have torn down to make way for a highway to St. Petersburg that may or may not be built. Beketov now uses a wheelchair and is unable to speak after a vicious beating by two unidentified assailants near his home left him unconscious in the snow and forced doctors to amputate his leg. His supporters claim the attack was retaliation for articles criticising local authorities.
