What do three nuns, two mayors, a Baptist preacher, and the founder of a car dealership all have in common? They all rode an ‘orphan train’ from New York City to Louisiana as tiny children. The story of abandoned and poor children who were sent to Louisiana for adoption will be told by their descendants. The unusual story of the orphan train begins with the fevered dreams of New York socialite Mary Fitzgibbons, who had cholera. She promised God that if she survived, she would devote her life to caring for impoverished children. She made good on that promise, and joined the Sisters of Charity. She started an orphanage and organized one-way trips in the spring of 1907 to pair orphans with new parents and lives in south Louisiana. Join us to learn more of this little-known chapter of American history and the important role the Catholic Church in this story, and to meet descendants of the original “riders.”
