It is possible to replace fossil fueled electricity generation with low or zero carbon electricity in Saskatchewan and Alberta using existing technology: Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES). The generation of wind and solar electricity now costs less than all other new electricity. Its generation, however, depends entirely on the availability of adequate sunlight and wind. CAES can cost effectively manage renewable power generation so emissions-free electricity can meet real-time demand. The provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta offer unparalleled technical expertise and prime geology necessary to build CAES. CAES assets will directly leverage our provinces’ oil and gas expertise to build a low-carbon future while generating jobs in these fields. Saskatchewan and Alberta geology offers ample capacity for thousands of megawatts of CAES and have world class renewable generation resources—sufficient to replace all fossil generation, offer opportunities for high-value load development and export potential. Dr. Stewart will present some background on CAES, a high level summary of the Saskatchewan and Alberta geological advantage and then speak to the costs of the CAES system. More details can be found in the white paper on our website: rmpenergystorage.ca.
