Gyumri is the second largest city in Armenia so I decided to take the marshrutka over and explore the city for myself. The first place I visited was the bazar in the center. After that, I took a Yandex to Victory park, which also has a statue of Mother Armenia. Victory Park is also close to the Black Fortress. This is an old fortress that dates back to the Russian Empire and was built to protect the empire from the Ottomans. The local caretaker even showed me around the fortress. Next, I visited the central park of the city where there was a nice soviet era amusement park. Finally, the next place I wanted to visit was the Iron Fountain. The fountain was part of the local university and was the only thing that survived the 1988 earthquake, which destroyed Gyumri. The Yandex driver lived very close to the fountain so he invited me over to his house and showed me old photos of it!
