The Jump Start program is an initiative of The Children’s Trust in collaboration with the University of Miami, Family Central, Inc., Community Health of South Florida, Inc, and Jewish Community Services of South Florida, Inc. Jump Start provides program, classroom, and child/family-level consultations in accordance with Georgetown University’s Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Consultations (I/ECMHC) model to early care and education programs (ECE) across Miami-Dade County. In collaboration with its partners, Jump Start works with ECE program administrators and teachers to improve the social-emotional functioning of children at-risk for expulsion and/or suspension. Although services are provided across the county, priority is given to ECE programs in The Children’s Trust Thrive by 5 program. A team of highly trained mental health consultants implement the I/ECMHC model using evidence-based toolkits to capacitate administrators and teachers to support children’s social-emotional development and increase awareness of biases that may impact expulsion. Through consultations, the program identifies individual needs, manages children’s difficult behaviors and supports children’s social-emotional development. A capacity-building framework is used to ensure sustainability. The program enrolls 100 ECEs each year and strives to expand its reach and provide quality services dedicated to improving the lives of young children in the community.
