This week we depart from the usual narrative to have a look at how the layout can be operated as a stand-alone setup. Once the second half of the build is complete, most of this will be a branch line. Ops will be designed to do just what you’re watching here, while dodging mainline traffic. GP38 204 is our power today. A note about this model and this unit: 204 sports dynamic brakes, unusual for the DT&I. It was originally part of an order for Maine Central that was cancelled mid-build. Subsequently, the first 7 DT&I GP38s (200-206) were to Maine Central specs, including Dynamic brakes, a bell mounted in the side of the nose, low headlight, and a gyrolight/emergency light combo in the upper light position. These were the first 7 production GP38s ever built. 205 and 206 sport gong bells instead of the nose-side bell, and all GP38s and GP40s from then on followed this standard. 200-206 spent most of their early life on the Ann Arbor. Note: this is also actual prototype history! This model is from Atlas and is well over 20 years old. It has LED headlights and ditch lights, lit number boards, and an NCE decoder, all installed by me. If this isn’t your money’s worth I don’t know what is! It also has the distinction of being the first orange “Modern DT&I” unit. We start by swapping 2 loads out for two empties at the paper mill. We add our caboose of GTW heritage, then we head over to Midland City. There, we switch out the LPG dealer and grab a cut of hoppers loaded with corn with an assist from the contract grain crew. Next, we head over to Thackery to pick up an empty center beam flat car. From there, we head into Newark/Ironton yard to drop off the corn, and pick up a few other cars.
