Bjarkamál (The Lay of Bjarki) is an ancient Old Norse heroic poem, preserved only in fragments within Saxo Grammaticus’ Gesta Danorum. In the old legends, Böðvarr Bjarki, warrior of King Hrólf Kraki, invokes the spirit of the bear within him and transforms into a berserker before the final battle. This track draws inspiration from those fragments, blending Old Norse lyrics, ritualistic chants and a dark cinematic soundscape. It captures the moment when the warrior’s hamr (spirit form) awakens and the boundary between man and beast fades away. Historical Context In Old Norse culture, berserkers (berserkir, meaning “bear-shirts”) were fierce warriors who fought in trance-like fury, believed to be possessed by animal spirits. The Bjarkamál was said to have been sung before battle to inspire courage and honor. While the original poem has been mostly lost, this track channels its mythic essence and ancestral power. Lyrics Language The lyrics are written in Old Norse, using reconstructed words and phonetics from the 10th century. Expressions like “bjarnarhamr” (bear’s shape) and “Fenrisblóð” (blood of Fenrir) evoke the deep mythology and ritualistic atmosphere of the Viking Age. ⚔️ Listen. Dream.
