Because I wanted to sync things to the screen, I needed to find a good tempo and structure. However, it was necessary to have moments when a extra beat was required, meaning some very fiddly time signature changes were needed. So, for the piano part, I needed to create a super complicated click track that jumped between going on-beat and off frequently. The click track had 4 different "pips" that helped indicate whether the time signature was counted in simple or compound time, a penultimate beat, then the downbeat. If hearing that sounds interesting I'll attach it to this description later! We ended up recording everything in small chunks, for assembly later on. The piano is layered with prepared piano, some sampled, some custom recorded by Andrew Zhou & I. We tried all sorts of things, from bowed strings (we destroyed a cheap horse hair bow, but an erhu bow fared quite well) to plucks and creating weird resonance with fishing wire. Some of those sounds are heard across the soundtrack, but in this piece it's mainly screws and paperclips applied to the hammers or damping cloth.
