Seoul Metro holds counterterrorism drill at Seoul's Sindorim station

서울 지하철 2호선 신도림역서 테러대응 합동훈련 As part of the ongoing Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercise,... police, firefighters, and soldiers held a counterterrorism drill this afternoon at a subway station in Seoul. The scenario was designed to simulate conditions as close as possible to those of a real attack. Our Oh Jung-hee takes us through this intense exercise. A terrorist runs through a subway car, screaming and assaulting the passengers. His bomb explodes, filling the train with smoke and knocking out the lights. The emergency systems kick in and the train comes to a stop. This counterterrorism training operation was held at 2 p.m. today... as part of the ongoing Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercise. "One-hundred-40 officials from the army, fire and police departments and district offices are taking part in this one-hour drill at Sindorim Station on Seoul's busy subway line 2 . The training assumes a mock situation where a terrorist bombs a moving train." As the safety doors open, passengers covering their noses and mouths evacuate the train and help others in the process. The police arrive on the scene and capture the terrorist... as firefighters put out the flames and carry away the injured. A group of soldiers search the train for any remaining bombs while others guard the platform and nearby areas. The training ends as metro crews get the train back online and finally announce the all-clear. The detailed roleplay, with its artificial smoke and emergency announcements, makes for a tense atmosphere in the underground facility. "Today's drill is to boost cooperation among related agencies and enhance quick response capabilities in the event of a terror attack on the subway." The realism of the training was amplified this year amid public concern over the threat of terrorism and the fact that an attack on the subway could cause massive casualties.
