An Israeli strike on a hospital in southern Gaza on Monday killed at least 20 people, according to local officials, including four reported to have been journalists working for international media organisations. Zaher al-Wahidi, head of the records department at the Gazan health ministry, which is controlled by Hamas, said the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis had been hit by successive strikes. The first hit the fourth floor, and a second strike hit the same spot as rescue crews and reporters arrived at the scene. The Associated Press (AP) identified a journalist killed in the strike as Mariam Dagga, one of its freelancers. Al Jazeera, the Qatari broadcaster, said that Mohammed Salama, a photographer, worked for them. Reuters reported that Hussam al-Masri, a contractor cameraman who had worked for the agency, was also among the dead. Another Reuters journalist, Hatem Khaled, was wounded in the attack. David Lammy, the British foreign secretary, said he was “horrified” by the latest deaths and called for an end to the fighting. “Horrified by Israel’s attack on Nasser hospital. Civilians, healthcare workers and journalists must be protected,” he said on X. “We need an immediate ceasefire.” President Trump, speaking to reporters in the White House, said: “I’m not happy about it. I don’t want to see it.” The Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, said that he deeply regretted what he described as the “tragic mishap”. Footage broadcast from the scene showed an apparent strike in the vicinity of several emergency workers who had arrived to help those wounded in an earlier attack. At least one civil defence worker was killed, the Gazan Civil Defence agency said in a statement.
