Multilingual Minds Initiative: Becoming a Content Creator (Dr Tom McConnell)

February 22, 2026 Dr. Tom McConnell, Professor of Science Education at Ball State University One of the keys to transforming educational systems around the world is the production of locally relevant educational materials. Historically, texts and other materials in schools in developing countries are produced in Europe or North America, and the content reflects a culture that differs greatly from the local contexts. In Dr. McConnell’s recent chapter, he discusses the need for local groups to become “Content Creators,” the developers of materials in local languages that feature local cultural symbolism and local educational needs. In this talk, he will highlight some projects that reflect this local content creation model. Discussion will include ways to get involved in publishing books and digital content to meet the needs of local schools.
