Ansonia Copper and Brass was a historic industrial complex located along the Naugatuck River in Ansonia, Connecticut. Founded in 1845 by Anson G. Phelps, it became a major manufacturer of brass and copper products. The factory played a key role in the city's development, earning Ansonia the nickname "The Copper City." At its peak, the plant was part of the American Brass Company and contributed significantly to wartime production during World War I and II. Over time, foreign competition and industry shifts led to its decline. The facility eventually operated as Ansonia Specialty Metals before closing in 2013. The site, spanning roughly 38 acres, has since been the focus of environmental cleanup and redevelopment efforts. City leaders are exploring ways to repurpose the area for future commercial or mixed-use development. The factory remains a symbol of Ansonia’s industrial heritage.
