Hi, this is Michelle. We continue to study the Sonatina op. 36, no. 1, the 2nd movement by Muzio Clementi. This movement is written in F major, a subdominant key of the C major. The first and the last movements are in the C major. The 2nd movement is in a miniature sonata-allegro form. It consists of 3 parts: exposition, development and recapitulation. The tempo is andante, which means walking speed. The time is in 3/4 which means quarter note receives 1 count and there are 3 counts per measure. There are 2 themes in both the exposition and recapitulation. The difference is in exposition the 2nd theme modulates to the dominant key (C major) in bar 9, whereas in the recapitulation the 2nd theme stays in F major (bar 23), because the music is about to end. The texture of this movement is homophonic, which means melody with accompaniment. Therefore, the right hand’s melody must play louder than the left’s triplets accompaniment. The trills in bar 3, 21 and 25 are played from the upper note, following the style of the Classical Period. “Fz” in bar 8, 13 and 15, is the abbreviation of “forzando”, an Italian word for “forcing.” Clementi used this sign quite frequently to indicate an accentuation of the loudest note of a crescendo. Keep a good balance when playing it. You can add a bit of pedal to enhance the tone quality, this is a delightful piece of music.
