The U.S. consumer price index spiked 7-point-5 percent last month compared to the same period last year. This is the highest annual increase of the index, which measures the costs of dozens of everyday consumer goods, since 1982. It was even higher than what Wall Street analysts had estimated. The Labor Department reported Thursday that the surge was driven by a rise in the index for all items by point-6 percent in January. Fuel rose the most last month,... surging 9-point-5 percent as part of a 46-point-5 percent on-year increase. Food costs jumped point-9 percent for the month,... or 7 percent over the past year. Pundits say the combination of higher food and housing prices could mean an even more rapid acceleration is underway. Against such backdrop,...
