The government will pay £3,000 to businesses to hire unemployed under-24-year-olds in new plans to cut youth unemployment. Speaking to Alex Forsyth on BBC Two’s Politics Live, Liberal Democrat MP Bobby Dean called the policy “the economics of the madhouse”, saying the government is paying businesses to create jobs that they had previously offered before the cost of those jobs got too high. Labour MP Natasha Irons said that the policy shows that “this is a government that is actually putting young people first and trying to get them into jobs and give them the opportunities they deserve”. Conservative Alex Burghart said the government is just trying to “patch its own problems”.
