Coffee Chats with Jesse - Do I Even Matter?

See you next Friday!! -------- Each and every human being on this planet has something that only THEY are called to do, regardless of what that is. And yet, many of us find ourselves constantly comparing that to what's "acceptable"... we adjust our looks and our preferences, we nit-pick our words and our behaviors to avoid feeling outcasted. But sometimes our true calling doesn't fit the mold laid out for us; we become insecure of who we really are and in turn spend a small eternity contorting ourselves to fit into these invisible boxes. I'VE spent a small eternity breaking every bone to "fit-in". And even though my journey as a musician has destroyed so many of these boxes, I still find myself performing off-stage, unknowingly desperate for acceptance. I'm beginning to notice that the lens I've been experiencing life through is tainted. How can I ever honor the calling inside of myself if I'm constantly answering with someone else's phone? In other words, our purpose (our "calling") is incompatible with the societal structures we exist within, and it is impossible to truly fulfill what we are called to do if we continue stuffing it into the framework of what has already been done, what is deemed "acceptable". As a creator, I frequently find myself blocked by thoughts of "is this understandable?", "is this relatable?", "is this GOOD?" But if we are always seeing ourselves through someone else's eyes, we are only doing ourselves a disservice. It doesn't matter what your "calling" is, or what that word even means to you... all that matters is that you fucking own it. Be weird! Be a freak! Be so yourself that it makes you so ridiculously uncomfortable! It IS a risk to put yourself out there, and rejection WILL happen. But all rejection means is that you're refusing to shrink yourself to fit into those damn boxes; and remember, they're called growing pains for a reason. I love you and I believe in you. What you bring to this world matters, and only YOU know what that is.
